The Massachusetts Paradox
Scientists, entrepreneurs, and investors have built a biotech ecosystem that is a key driver of Massachusetts’ economic engine. The state is home to more than 1,000 biopharma companies, supporting over 117,000 jobs that generate $23 billion in total wages. Massachusetts has built a biopharma powerhouse that is the envy of other states – and countries – desperate to replicate its success.
But despite all the good that Massachusetts biopharma does, the Massachusetts public chooses to elect policymakers that advance policies undermining the very industry and innovation they should be championing.
That’s the MA Paradox.

Introducing the MA‑rketing Coalition
Introducing the MA-rketing Coalition, a NPLB-led alliance of biotech startups, large pharmas, investors, universities, nonprofits, creatives, and public partners unified in the belief that biomedical innovation is worth protecting, and that better health and better medicine are worth fighting for.
Our plan: Develop and distribute character-driven storytelling that inspires the Massachusetts public with the achievements and struggles of their home state heroes: the scientists, inventors, and investors working to create breakthrough treatments that transform lives and health forever.
This work will take all of us.

This cartoon simplifies the conversation on vaccines by reminding us of the obvious truth—vaccines are much better than the diseases they prevent.
This cartoon tells the story of the MA Paradox—where patients turn against the very industry working to develop life-saving treatments.
This cartoon flips the usual debate about vaccines. You don’t need to know everything about vaccines to know one thing for sure: measles kills.
This cartoon exposes a hard truth. No one would fake cancer for free chemo, yet real patients can’t afford it. The satire forces discomfort where it belongs—with those who have the power to fix a broken system.
My doctor says I need this. I’ve been paying my premiums. I don’t understand the problem.
So your insurance company decided they know medicine better than your actual doctor?
